Web Site Design for BugBand Insect Repellent

By BugBand, Graphic Works, web site design
Every couple of years, I get to update the web site for one of my oldest clients, BugBand Natural Insect Repellent. I went very colorful with an emphasis on green which is now a major direction for the retail packaging and displays.

My favorite enhancement to the site is the new graphic headers on many of the pages. I wanted to show the various situations where the products could be used. Visit the site at www.BugBand.net.

NASCAR Race with the Boy Scouts

By Boy Scouts, BugBand, Event photography, Nascar, racing
Recently, a longtime friend and client invited me to a Nascar night race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The races are done in highly modified trucks which speed by at 185 miles per hour. Dan’s company, BugBand, supports a young racer named Max Gresham who drives the #8 truck.
The truck is painted in the BugBand company colors. It is easy to spot when you are trying to locate it on the other side of the massive track. It takes nerves of steel to push the trucks to those speeds on a notoriously slick track at night while in a pack of other trucks fighting for position. I have a great respect for those guys.
Along with supporting the racing, Dan also brought a troop of young Boy Scouts with him. They were good lads who seemed to enjoy the experience. Below, a stranger came up and praised them. He said that he used to get picked on for wearing his uniform. It happened to me too, so I know what he was talking about.
Below is my favorite shot of the event. To me is seems like a different era… maybe the early sixties.

Dan arranged a very special treat for the Boy Scouts. They were allowed to go down on the track and meet each racer in person. How cool is that? Here they are in front of the presentation stage. Very soon the same asphalt they are standing on would be a race lane.
Many of the racers were very gracious to the Scouts. Here Max is handing out sticker to the guys.
On top of all that, Dan did not even tell anyone that it was his birthday, though someone figured it out an surprised him with a huge cookie cake with his company logo on it. Good try Dan. You cannot skip your own birthday just because you are taking care of everyone else.

Package & Display Design for Bed Bug Pesticide

By Andrew Hughes, bed bugs, BugBand, EES, Graphic Design, Graphic Works, Inc., insecticide, new products, package design
These bed bugs are
nasty little suckers

Remember that old saying “Don’t let the bed bugs bite”? That was a reality for our parents’ and grandparents’ genrations. That changed when pesticides like DDT were used to devastating effect in the 1940s to practically wipe out bed bugs infestations. Decades later DDT was determined to be environmentally and medically dangerous and taken off the market. It is an unpleasant fact that bed bugs (that were once a thing of past) are now coming back with a vengeance in hotels, motels and even theaters.

My client, BugBand, manufacturers natural insect repellent products that deter insects by emitting Geraniol vapors. Geraniol contains a naturally derived extract from Geranium flowers which people have been using for hundreds of years in window boxes to keep insects out of their homes.

These packages are not shown to scale. The one of the left is only a small 3 oz. travel size bottle.

Last year, BugBand introduced their first pesticide aimed directly at bed bugs. Bed Bugs No More! uses a strong concentration of Geraniol to kill bed bug eggs, larvae, nymphs and adult bed bugs. Geraniol dissolves the exoskeleton of the bedbugs and they cannot become immune to the effects. This is different from the nerve agent pesticides that are usually used, and only affect adults insects with developed nervous systems. Bed Bugs No More! is not toxic and safe for humans. This is my layman’s understanding of complicated chemical processes and biology. More information will soon be on the BugBand web site.

Long story short, I got to design the Bed Bugs No More! packages, two being your standard pump bottle and the other, a small travel size package that uses heat shrink technology to adhere the label to the bottle. In this case, labels are printed as circular plastic sleeves that shrink when heat is applied to them making a colorful and tamper-resistant package. I also designed the displays coming to a store near you.

Where My Designs End Up…

By BugBand, EES, Graphic Design, Graphic Works
One of my favorite Graphic Works clients, EES, was kind enough to send me a snapshot of her (Linda)  at a trade show. Rarely do I get to see where some of my designs end up so this was a treat for me. I have been working with EES for over 10 years and they fantastic people with innovative cleaning and odor control products for industrial in institutional use. They also have a retail division that sells the wildly successful BugBand insect repellents made with Geraniol. From humble beginnings, BugBand is now sold in huge retail chains and even in different countries around the world. That stuff works wonders at keeping insects away from you.
I have created package designs, displays, retail signs catalogs and web sites for BugBand and EES so I have a lot of interest in their continued success. Thanks EES for being such great clients and friends.
