Ice ‘N Heat Ice Bag Package Design and Product Photos

By Graphic Design, package design, product photography

We have all seen the traditional ice bag and probably used them for aches and pains. This updated version by BeWell uses modern technology to improve on an old design. This bag can handle warm or cold water and it has special temperature indicators on the bottom of the bag to let the user know when it is time to change the warm water or ice in the bag. The snowflake symbol appears when the bag is icy cold or the sun symbol appears when it is time to add more warm water. Pretty neat…no guessing involved.

For this project, I took photos of the ice bag in several different angles, using a soft light side light to accentuate the folds of the bag. I was careful to control the highlight to shadow ratio so that the photo would have detail in the shadows on the future packaging.

I designed a medium and large box for the bags based on BeWell’s retail packaging style. Look for them in store near you.

Package Design and Product Photography for BeWell Products

By Graphic Design, package design, product photography

BeWell is a company that makes many of the healthcare-related products that one may find in drug stores. Some of those products include moist heat bags that are warmed in a microwave before applying to one’s body. The old packaging was a cylinder of of plastic with a paper label insert. This took up too much shelf space and was too expensive.

A more efficient, compact and cheaper packaging solution was needed.  Pennies saved per package can add up over a year’s time and make a huge difference in the profit margin. The cyclider design was transferred to small boxes.

I hand built sample boxes for an investor meeting and took photos for future promotional materials. I tend to shoot products like this one box at a time and then assemble them into groups as needed. This gives me the same perspective on each product photo and they look better in catalogs and web sites at a consistent angle. I can also change the backgrounds easily depending on what is needed.

Photoshoot for New Cut Level 5 Gloves

By corporate photography, Graphic Works, product photography, Showa Best Glove

Being in the advertising business gives me a first hand look at incredible products before they become well known on the market. At Graphic Works I regularly work for a large global glove manufacturer who has over 1800 different varieties of gloves and sleeves for hand protection. They have a glove for every occasion and for every segment of the market including chemical resistant, cut resistant, hi-tech, disposable and general purpose. I have personally tested many of them and they are tough!

This photo was taken with a split diffuser to get hard light on the glove and soft light on the background.

For Showa Best’s latest offering, we needed to photograph 3 of their new high-level cut-resistant gloves. These products have some of the highest ANSI cut level protection ratings available. We often take 2 types of photographs of the gloves… beauty shots and application shots. Both of these photos can be used in advertising, catalogs and web sites.

The top layer of metal on this photo was white foam core which was later digitally replaced by metal textures.

The photographs often start with a rough concept and we then build a small set in studio to bring the sketch to life. Sometimes we have to have the elements positioned exactly like the sketch to fit the photo into a specific layout. Other times we can use the sketch as inspiration.

Here are the three photos all shot in studio. After each image is carefully retouched, hopefully they look like they were taken on a dirty construction site.

My boss had fun smashing these wood pieces! What a racket!

Photos of a Heirloom Quality Baptism Dress

By dress, Graphic Works, product photography

I was asked to photograph baptism dress at the Graphic Works studio today. No big deal I thought…then my boss pulled it out of the case.

It was the most intricate and delicate heirloom-quality baptism dress that I had ever seen. The workmanship was impressive, and I can only imagine the amount of hours put into making something like that. Actually, there are over 40 hours of work into this.

What I was surprised to find was that the dress was totally hand made… including the lace.

This is not something that you get to see any more because people are unwilling to spend that amount of time and effort doing this tedious and delicate work by hand.

Making the white on white details of the stitching show up was a challenge, but you can see that every stitch was placed with love. If you need a good seamstress or a baptism outfit for your child, contact Susan Wasmer at fabricmom@hotmail.com

Virtual Product Photography

By Graphic Design, product photography, retouching

A few months ago, I photographed a product that was on its way to production. The product prototype was in the studio for one day before heading to China. The photo was going to be used on the retail packaging and web site.

Many weeks later, the product specs changed and a new photograph was needed showing the addition of a LED light and the top in an open position. Since, the prototype was thousands of miles away, I had to create add the new details in photoshop and make them convincing enough to use on packaging and posters.

Product Photography for the Extreme Gourmet

By hot sauce, product photography, The Extreme Gourmet

Talk about a hot job… My mouth was watering while I was clicking the shutter.

The Extreme Gourmet make some of the best hot sauce made with home grown peppers. Whenever the owner creates a new recipe in the kitchen, I get to photograph the product that results from his culinary creativity. This BBQ sauce has a little kick with fresh chipotle that you can see in the sauce. The small bottle contains jolokia peppers… the hottest peppers in the world. One drop will light you up!

Protective Glove Photography in a Factory

By Aegis, Factory, Gloves, Graphic Works, photography, product photography

Graphic Works was asked to photograph a set of industrial cut-resistant gloves for a catalog. This product is made with kevlar to resist cuts and has abrasion-resistant rubber palms to provide great dexterity. These gloves will take lots of abuse and protect the wearer’s hands. I made these photos on location at another client’s factory where there was a lot of sharp blades and oily equipment. The 2 photos below will be the ones to be used in company literature.

Loominocity Illuminated Ornament Gallery

Ramping up for Christmas starts many months in advance for makers of ornaments and holiday decorations. I was hired by Loominocity to photograph their illuminated star and angel tree toppers, and their illuminated candles. The tree toppers look like lead crystal that is lighted from within by powerful LED lights that shift colors. The effect is quite beautiful, but it is also difficult to photograph an item that is reflective, transparent and colored by an internal light source all at the same time. Tricky indeed to get right.
