Family Portraits With The Caponis

By corporate photography, family, portrait photography

Several of my friends are in the process of expanding their families and I have become the “unofficial” family photographer taking portraits every few months. This keeps me involved as the honorary uncle and let’s me spend time with the little munchkins that grow like kudzu in the summer.

The Caponis wanted some 9 month photos of little Allessandra so I packed up the portable studio and went to their home. We made good use of our time taking photos of both parents, grandma, the dog and baby.

We took some photos of Mom and baby, Dad and baby and Grandma and baby.

Allesandra has Grandma’s deep blue eyes and looks like a mini-me version of her.

Here are three generations together. Talk about a family resemblance.

Allessandra was dressed to the 9’s with a flower headband and striped trousers. Cute!

Photoshoot for New Cut Level 5 Gloves

By corporate photography, Graphic Works, product photography, Showa Best Glove

Being in the advertising business gives me a first hand look at incredible products before they become well known on the market. At Graphic Works I regularly work for a large global glove manufacturer who has over 1800 different varieties of gloves and sleeves for hand protection. They have a glove for every occasion and for every segment of the market including chemical resistant, cut resistant, hi-tech, disposable and general purpose. I have personally tested many of them and they are tough!

This photo was taken with a split diffuser to get hard light on the glove and soft light on the background.

For Showa Best’s latest offering, we needed to photograph 3 of their new high-level cut-resistant gloves. These products have some of the highest ANSI cut level protection ratings available. We often take 2 types of photographs of the gloves… beauty shots and application shots. Both of these photos can be used in advertising, catalogs and web sites.

The top layer of metal on this photo was white foam core which was later digitally replaced by metal textures.

The photographs often start with a rough concept and we then build a small set in studio to bring the sketch to life. Sometimes we have to have the elements positioned exactly like the sketch to fit the photo into a specific layout. Other times we can use the sketch as inspiration.

Here are the three photos all shot in studio. After each image is carefully retouched, hopefully they look like they were taken on a dirty construction site.

My boss had fun smashing these wood pieces! What a racket!

2011 Help Portrait

By Atlanta, corporate photography, Help Portrait

This year I participated in the nationwide event called the Help Portrait Project. For years I had heard about the annual event where photographers give back to people in need. For a day, volunteer photographers set up studios at charities and churches that help the poor, the sick and the homeless. Here is the promo video below.

We spent time with the families, take their portrait and give them each a framed 8×10 photo before Christmas. It may not sound like much to give someone a portrait of themselves, but many of the participating families do not have any pictures of themselves. I am told that some of the people never had photos taken before and it can have a powerful effect.

One the surface, this might sound like a lot of sad people showed up to get their photo taken, but that is not what I experienced. The people that I met were warm and friendly… even fun. Some of the children were the cutest hams and had us all laughing.

I will not be showing any of the photos we took that day since there are confidentiality promises in place, and the event was not about any particular photographer getting a great portrait for his portfolio. It was about connecting with everyday people and giving them a simple gift of compassion.

As a side note, Chik-Fila was kind enough to supply the Atlanta area locations with lunch. Here is a photo of me in front of a mountain of chicken sandwiches before they were distributed. I am glad they did not fall on me… I would have had to eat my way to the surface. Darn!

Head Shot Portraits for an Atlanta Law Firm

By Atlanta, corporate photography, Graphic Works, head shots

This week at Graphic Works I had the opportunity to take head shot portraits of 12 lawyers of a local Atlanta law firm. They are going to use the photos for their web site profiles and for publications when needed.

I love making these kind of photos because it gives me a chance to connect with people one-on-one. I also like delivering photos that the subject will be happy to use… even ones who inform me that they “hate to have their picture taken”. My goal is to win those people over and make them change their mind about having a portrait made… or at least to make the process seem painless.

The mood during my portrait sessions is laid back and fun. I will adjust my shooting style based on the particular person sitting in front of me, but I always want my subjects to feel at ease because that makes the best portraits.

My typical workflow for corporate portraits involves setup on in the client’s office or in our studio. Then I schedule about 15 minutes per person to shoot, review and pick the final image. I shoot with my camera tethered to a computer so that we can make an “on-the-spot” review and choose the final photo. We discuss any retouching requests at that time too. Clients love seeing the photo that they will get and it saves me from their second guessing later. Everyone is happy this way.

New Web Site Launched for Atlanta Business Photography

By corporate photography, Graphic Design, Graphic Works, Masqueman Photography
After weeks of sorting, editing and writing, I am finally able to launch AtlantaBusinessPhotos.com … a portfolio of photography, illustration and retouching. Some of you are already familiar with my photography services for personal portraits and events seen at AtlantaPortraitPhoto.com, but I needed another portfolio for just business-related photography and illustration services.

I built this site for Graphic Works, aka the “day-job” that I have held since 1992. While most of the photography on it is mine, the site is meant to represent the work of 3 other photographers and artists that  are employed at Graphic Works. We have been producing more photography and video content over the past year and needed a way to share this with our clients. Give it a look…

An Unforgettable Day of Driving Exotic Supercars

By automobiles, corporate photography, supercars

ne of my oldest friends, Scott, had his 40th birthday this year and his wife, Maura, went all-out to make his big day special. Anyone that knows Scott knows that he is a huge gear head and loves anything with a motor and 4 wheels. The more exotic, the better.

Scott’s automotive collection started moestly way back in college when he drove a “Vette”. No, not a Corvette, but a Chevette. Later as Scott become more successful, he was able to trade up. Now he owns a rare BMW M-Coupe, a car designed by Chip Foose and a sweet customtized Mercedes.

For his birthday present, his wife gave him a chance to spend a day in supercars that very few people have the chance to see, much less drive. Here’s where it gets good for me. Maura gets motion sickness and cannot stand to be in fast cars. I was asked to make the ultimate sacrifice and take a day off to go with him. It took me about 1/2 a second to make up my mind. It was one of the coolest things I have ever experienced.

The tour is unique in the fact that you drive ultra-exotic machines on public roads for at least 30 minutes per car. There were 5 cars and 8 drivers so there were 3 instances where each driver had to be a passenger, but I don’t think anyone minded this because it let you expereince the car from a different perspective.

My whole day was spent as a passenger, and there is a very good reason these cars are named supercars. They accellerate faster and stop harder than anything on the road. I come from a motorcycling background and they are on par or exceed the performance of those. I had to recalibrate my mind with the compressed stopping distances, the “stick-like-glue” grip and pure grunt of 400-500+ horsepowered vehicles.

And even though we were warned to obey all traffic rules and that the driver would be responsible for speeding tickets or car damage, the cars were put through their paces. I rolled video of the several people driving and I noticed that I was laughing nervously in some of the turns. I am glad that I had something to occupy my mind from the terror.

The cars were mind-boggling expensive with the priciest one topping $500,000. The cheapest one of the bunch was a measly $237,000. So, next time you think you want to buy a house, skip that and see if the bank will give you a loan for a car.

Headshots for 3 Atlanta Financial Advisors

By corporate photography, headshot portraits, portaits

At my day job, we recently put the finishing touches on the new Graphic Works photography studio. We always have had part of our office dedicated to studio photography, but frankly it was a little cramped for portraits. I would have to shoot down the hall to get the depth I needed. Not the best situation when dealing with people.

Now, all this all has changed with our new allocation of photo space. I can easily take head an even full body photos with my super sweet 70-200 zoom. The gear is organized and easy to get. This is awesome.
The first subjects in the new space were 3 financial advisors. If you recognize one of the faces, it’s because I had just taken photos of Mark Koppelmann a week earlier. He liked them so much that he suggested that his colleagues get head shot portraits from me. We did 3 quick poses for each person an here they are. For the full gallery, click here.

Corporate Head Shot Portrait for a Financial Expert

By corporate photography, headshot portraits

Mark Koppelmann is the principal financial advisor for Koppelaman Associates, a trusted financial planning company in Atlanta, Georgia. He needed up-to-date head shots for his web site and communication materials and asked me to take his portrait. By the way, if you need financial planning services, don’t hesitate to check out www.KoppelmannAssociates.com. I trust him with my own investments, and he has been the most honest, realistic and reliable advisor that I have ever worked with.

I took his “official” photos with my portable studio indoors, but we also took some informal ones outside to take advantage of the fantastic fall color that was just starting to make its appearance. I like to give my clients a lot of variety to choose from, and they can use different portrait photos for formal presentations, social media and personal communications.

Interior Photography for an Audio Visual Installation Company

By corporate photography, interior photography, Performance AV, tvguy.net

Performance Audio Visual contacted me to take photos of some of their stereo and television installations. They needed samples of their installations for promotion on their web site and advertising materials.

If you are in the Atlanta area and need a perfectionist to install your television, computer network or car stereo, give Jason Caponi at Performance AV a call or check out their web site at www.tvguy.net.

Professional Headshot of an Atlanta Doctor

By corporate photography, headshot portraits

Two years after taking headshot portraits for a medical practice of 17 individual doctors, I had to photograph a new doctor who had just been hired.

Recreating the same exact lighting WAY after the fact, can be a daunting task if one is not prepared. Getting this portrait to look similar to the original ones taken so long ago was key.

Luckily, I take extensive setup notes and draw cryptic diagrams for this very situation. Without my detailed information, I would not be able to duplicate the shot, and I would have to try to “fix it” in photoshop… not a good strategy.

With my notes in hand, everything worked like a charm.
