Another Tree Care Service Web Site

Visit the Maters Tree Care for Atlanta, GA

I had just completed the web site for R&L Tree Experts, LLC a few weeks ago, when I was approached by The Masters Tree Care Service to work on their web site.

This was not coincidence since the owners of both Atlanta tree care companies are brothers. Many of the services provided by each company is the similar and in cases of large jobs, they can combine resources and manpower.

To save them production costs, I reworked the previous web site to look different and changed the text where appropriate. It was a win-win situation for everyone. I was able to provide a second web site at a great discount.

Both of the tree care companies do great work and I have recommended them to my friends.

Atlanta Tree Removal - R&L Tree Experts

As fate would have it, I woke up one morning last week to discover that the 60 year old oak tree in my front yard had split almost right down the middle and was hanging together by a thread. This was very depressing because my family loves this tree. It was one of the first things that we would see in the mornings and one of the last things we would see in the sunset. I had taken many portraits in front of it and now, sadly, it would have to be cut down.

After calling 5 different tree removal companies in Atlanta, I was surprised that I was not getting any call backs. Don’t these companies want my money? By pure luck I was driving home when I saw R&L Tree Experts working in a nearby neighborhood. I asked them to give me a quote and they came early that evening. Their estimate was fair, and they were willing to do the work the very next day. This was great because the tree was very unstable and could have easily fallen on my house.

They did a great job the next morning, and I even had them remove some humongous pines that were dangerously leaning over my house. I would recommend R&L Tree Experts to anybody in the Atlanta area who needs tree removal service.

Talking to the owner, Romel,  I found out that they did not have a web site and I offered to make them one. These guys had built their business on word-of-mouth and referrals only, but it was time to modernize. These guys were genuinely nice people, and I really wanted to help them.

Part of the design project was to take photos of them performing various tree removal duties. I also wanted to make a simple time-lapse movie showing them removing a tree. We helped them with the marketing of the site by writing the text and came up with a final web site that I think will serve them well in the Atlanta market. You can check it out at www.RLTreeExperts.com.

From a personal point of view, I like the fact that I can offer my clients photography, video, web design and graphic design services under one roof. If that’s not versatile, I don’t know what is…

128 Corporate Headshot Portraits

By corporate photography, head shots, portraits, time lapse

Finally, the shooting was over. It took 6 days to shoot 128 corporate portraits on location at a large Atlanta corporation. The actual photography could have been done faster, but it was best to offer time slots to accommodate the busy schedules of so many people.

I shot these with my camera tethered to my computer so the subjects could see their photos and help chose the best photo. If there was extra time between subjects, I would retouch photos on the spot. This made me popular with some of the people who had special retouching requests.

To celebrate the end of this large job, I made a simple time-lapse movie of deconstructing my portable portrait studio. This video also shows the last person being photographed too.

Consolidated B-24 Liberator Bomber at Sunset

By Air Show, airplanes, aviation, corporate photography, Fantasy of Flight, Sun N Fun, Sunsets

I am in the process of sorting thousands of photos to update my photography portfolio, and I realized that some photos (for one reason or another) were never really attended to at the time I took them. Time is always in short supply and new projects mean that I have to constantly move onward.

Here is a perfect example. I took a photo of this little gem at the Fantasy of Flight aviation museum in Polk City, Florida. I was in town for the Sun & Fun Airshow and the warbird community was having a steak cook out in the hangar of the museum. The food was great, but the scenery was unmatchable… better than any restaurant I could imagine.

The airplane in the photo is a Consolidated B-24 Liberator Bomber which has to be one of the most ungainly but successful bomber designs of World War 2. It doesn’t look like it should fly, but it did, and with devastaing effect. They made over 18,000 of them for the war.

Portrait with a 1000 Watt Smile

By corporate photography, headshot portraits, portrait photography, portraits
After a corporate headshot photo session, I was having fun with Tony, the subject seen here. If recall correctly, he did not love having his photo taken.

For the “official” photo he was more reserved, but as soon as I told him the shoot was over, he gave me the million dollar smile. Luckily I had my finger on the shutter ready to capture it. Sometimes I know when somebody is holding a little extra charm in reserve and Tony had it just waiting for it to show. I retouched the photo to make it more like a magazine portrait instead of just a headshot to go into a catalog.

Bobby McAlpine Book Signing Party at Macrae Showroom

By Bobby McAlpine, Book signing, corporate photography, Event photography, Macrae Designs
I was recently hired to photograph an interesting event. World famous architect and interior designer,  Bobby McAlpine was on hand at MacRae Designs Showroom at The Atlanta Decorative Arts Center to sign copies of his new book, The Home Within Us. There was quite a crowd on hand and everyone seemed to have a great time.

Mr. McAlpine tirelessly signed stacked of books and talked with everyone who approached him. He was an incredibly warm and genuine fellow with a good sense of humor.

Chilly Holiday Photos

By corporate photography, portraits, Virginia Beach, virginia highland

I met my nephew and his family early one morning in Town Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia for some quick photos for their holiday cards. The weather had been pleasant until that morning when chilly winds started blowing hard enough to make me feel like my jacket had a hole in it. We were all cold so we cut the session down to just a few moments. Brrr….

Headshot for a Psychologist Writer

Dr. Glenda Corwin

I was contacted by Dr. Glenda Corwin to take a portrait for her soon-to-be-published book about  lesbian relationships. Glenda is a fantastic person who is instantly likable and a pleasure to talk to. We had a good time making her portrait.

I used Strobist techniques to make the portrait with small Canon flashes and Pocket Wizard remote triggers.

You can see the the final portrait options I offered her along with the original unretouched photo in this gallery. (The original photo is the very last one of the first page.)

Corporate Event Photography at ADAC Atlanta

Low Light Conference at ADAC

I was hired by a long time client to take photos of a special event seminar about Green Design that she was hosting in ADAC’s presentation room. The seminar had many distinguished speakers from the interior design, architecture and scientific worlds and it was important to record this event.

When I arrived at the room, I noticed how dark it was. Their plan was to show slides as the speakers talked about their areas of expertise. Mary requested no flash so that the speakers would not be disturbed.
Luckily, I own the new Canon 5D Mark 2 which allowed me to boost my ISO to extremely high levels without noise in the final images. Along with a trusty monopod and controlled application of the shutter, I was able to pull the job off without a hitch.
My client was thrilled with the final photos of the seminar and the wine party in her shop afterwards, and she gave me a nice compliment: “I did not even notice you during the seminar, but you got the shots!”
