Atlanta Photo Workshops by Dean Stevenson Launches Web Site

By adult education, Atlanta, Atlanta Business, Dean Stevenson, photographer, Photography school, web site design

I met Dean Stevenson many years ago when I was taking classes at Showcase School of Photography. He is the best photography teacher that I have ever had. I never missed the opportunity to improve my knowledge and skills with a camera when he was teaching class. Sometimes I would get on the waiting list to take his classes, but it was worth the wait. Over the years I ended up taking every class that he taught until there were no more left.

I also had the opportunity to work with him professionally assisting him in a wedding shoot. I could see his work ethic up close. No detail was overlooked and the job was a success.

For years, Dean’s dream has been to open his own school of photography in his own studio space, and now that dream is a reality as Atlanta Photo Workshops opens for business.  Dean has designed several photography classes based on his experience teaching literally thousands of students. He has rewritten several of his core classes to be even better than before.

Students have the choice of taking 5 week courses that involve weekly assignments, a fieldtrip and critiques. Or, they can take a intensive lecture-based class in one day. Students also have an opportunity to have personal tutoring with his one-on-one courses. Large groups and photo clubs can hire Dean for seminars.

Courses include:

I built the web site for him and am proud to give back to the teacher I owe so much too. Thanks Dean. Best of luck with your photography school. Check out the site at www.AtlantaPhotoWorkshops.com

Syl Arena Canon Speedliting Class

By photographer, pixelated.com, seminar, Speedliting.com, Syl Arena

Syl Arena, the writer of the popular photo blogs, pixsylated.com and speedliting.com was in Atlanta to teach his philosophy of using portable off camera flashes to create dynamic and beautiful light. This class was specifically for the Canon Speedlite system which has its share of idiosyncrasies.

Syl showed us how to create interesting lighting effects using portable Canon flashes, diffusers and hi-speed synching techniques. The all day class opened my mind to what is possible with the simple flashes I already carry in my bag. I learned powerful techniques that give the photographer the tools to turn high noon into midnight, or make the mundane dramatic. Really magical kind of stuff.

During lunch, I shared a photo of my wife with Syl who told me that he would love to photograph her. I guess redheads have to stick together. The next day he produced some of my favorite images that I have seen of my wife, Jenny.

Any photographer looking to refresh his small flash knowledge, or push onto the next level, should definitely consider taking this class. A full event schedule can be found here. And if that was not enough, Syl is putting the finishing touches on his Canon Speedliting book due out within months. I personally can’t wait. Thanks Syl.

Meeting the Tattooed Man

Steve's Photo Gallery
Steve's Photo Gallery

At a party I went to over the summer, I met a very interesting man named Steve who was tattooed all over his body. The gathering was a cool event that attracted a unique collection of characters that could have come from a traveling circus. There were fire jugglers, trapeze artists and acrobats. Many people were in costumes. These people knew how to have fun and everyone was friendly. Steve and the others allowed me to shoot them as much as I wanted.

Later I contacted him to share the photos. This is when I found out that he is a professional photographer and videographer… and a very accomplished one at that. Needless to say, this made me nervous after the fact. I had unknowingly photographed a  man who has been in the business longer than I have been alive. He shared some fascinating stories and insights with me, and I instantly liked him. You can see some of Steve Carmichael’s photography here.

Web Site for Photographer Teri Darnell

By photographer, photography, web site design

Web site of photographer Teri Darnell
My friend Teri asked me to create a portfolio site for her excellent photography. I met her in a photo composition class at Showcase School of photography and was impressed with her work. She has been getting inquiries about her work so this site can do all the talking for her. I built this site so she could easily update her portfolio herself directly from Lightroom, with out having to resort to HTML editing. Give her site a look at www.TeriDarnell.com
